The city police claim to have busted a gang of bookies, betting on IPL matches, by arresting four of its members, all Jalandhar residents, from a house located near Railway Road on Monday evening.
“When a police team raided the house, the four accused were busy on cell-phones, laptops and televisions. They were passing ball-by-ball status of betting to their clients. The accused were later identified as Lalit Kumar, Gurminder Singh, Dharminder Kumar and Sanjay Singh,” DSP Paramjeet Singh said.
Investigations have shown the racket might have been controlled from Delhi. “We have sent the details of the accused to the officials in New Delhi. A probe could expose some big names,” he added.
Two laptops, two televisions, 14 cell phones, betting logbooks and Rs 12,417 in cash, he added. The accused have been booked under Police had booked the accused under sections 13/A/3/67 of The Punjab Gambling Act, 420 of the IPCand 66/67 of Information Technology Act, 2000. The accused have been remanded to one-day police custody.
