The district (rural) police on Monday suspended the Kartarpur station house officer (SHO) for not adhering to the instructions of the higher ups to control drug peddling in the area under his jurisdiction.
SHO Jaswinder Singh was suspended for dereliction of duty and non-compliance of the instructions, superintendent of police (SP) Mukhwinder Singh said.
Meanwhile, police sources said that when Jaswinder was Lambra SHO, he had been accused of forcibly entering into the residence of an Akali sarpanch of Kalyanpur village, where the cops had allegedly beaten up sarpanch's wife. Vice president of National Commission of Scheduled Caste, Raj Kumar Verka, had taken a serious note of beating up of a Dalit woman by cops and accordingly, a departmental enquiry was initiated against the SHO, sources said.
Even the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had launched a series of protests, demanding the SHO's suspension.
However, the SP ruled out any link of Kalyanpur incident with SHO's suspension and cited only administrative reasons behind it.
Meanwhile, another SHO, Jaimal Singh of Maqsudan police station, was also transferred to police lines. The reason for the same too was cited as administrative.
