Reacting to the recent suicide of a rape victim, the Punjab Mahila Congress vice-president Nimisha Mehta on Friday said that rape victims in state are not getting humane and proper treatment from the police. State government loudly boasted off the lower crime rate in the assembly but on
ground, the reality is completely opposite, she said while talking to media persons.

"Firstly, rape cases are not registered in the state and the complainants are tormented and harassed in the police stations by asking irrelevant and baseless questions," she said.

"In the Patiala suicide case too, the victim was tormented for nearly two week by the policemen and the case was not registered. The police only acted after her suicide and arrested the accused. It only shows how the accused enjoyed patronage of the police," she added.

"Police has no right in trying to reach a compromise between the two parties as it becomes more painful for the victim and her family members, who have to live in this male-dominated society," she further added.

Mehta also said, "In the news appearing in a section of the media, a lady here is also moving from pillar to post to get her case registered against a person who deceived her. The police, in this case too, are asking her to reach a compromise. It is such inhumane treatment that forces victims' to take such extreme steps."

Demanding immediate and assured action from the state police, she said, "Suspension and departmental enquiries are not the solution. The police officers who failed to perform their duties on such sensitive issues should be dismissed so that such incidents can be avoided in the future."
