On March 28, 2011, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, along with then health minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla and ex-MLA late Jatinder Singh Kariha, had laid a foundation stone of the new building of civil hospital. However, nothing has been added to the site and the lone name plaque of the inauguration is also in a state of disrepair.
Repeated representations to political leaders and others to build the new building have simply been dismissed. At the time of inauguration, 16 kanals of land was made available for free and even funds were allotted, but in the absence of any political will, the new building has not been constructed.
In the current facility on offer, the operation theatre and the ward have turned into storerooms.
The hospital is being run by a medical officer, a pharmacist, two ANMs and two class-IVmployees and closes after 4 pm.
Sources in health department said that that was not facility for water and toilets inside the civil hospital. Electricity supply was also non-existent.
Congress leader and former councillor Satish Chopra said, “Rahon, with a population of around Rs. 27,000, excluding the residents of 80 adjoining villages, immediately needs a civil hospital.”
He said, “Rahon is located in an accident prone area and most injured people have to be taken to a hospital in Nawanshahr or a private hospital, which wastes precious time.”
Rahon municipal council president Dinesh Chopra, who donated his 16 kanal land for construction of new building of hospital, said, “A budget of Rs. 4-5 crore was also allotted for the construction of new building. However, due to unknown and unexplained reasons, construction on the building is yet to start.”
“I had met apprised health minister Madan Mohan Mittal of the situation a few months ago. He had assured me that he will take up the matter with the chief minister,” said Dinesh.
Civil surgeon Dr Amarjeet Kaur also expressed his concern over the state of affairs. She said, “The government did appoint staff for the hospital, including and SMO and a team of expert doctors. However, as there was no building, the allotted posts were cancelled."
She said that she would take up the matter with the higher authorities.
