In the rivalry prevailing since last many years, a 32-year-old youth was shot dead by a group of assailants outside his home on Saturday night.
After seeing the shootout and blood-shed body of his younger son, the father of victim also died due to cardiac arrest.
The shootout happened at around 10.00pm on Saturday when Manoj Kumar Chopra alias Deepa, the younger brother of erstwhile don-duo 'Makhan-Deepa', was on the way to his home after parking his vehicle near his house. Deepa and his brother Madan Chopra alias Makhan had 12 cases booked against under Indian Penal Code and Arms Act in the city and adjoining police stations for rioting, extortion and providing injuries to others, Kapurthala DSP Paramjeet Singh revealed.
Reportedly, both the brothers had aside themselves from illegal activities and were in the business of finance and property-dealing for over a year.
On Saturday night, he was targeted by a group of motorcyclists, waiting for him near the Power Health Club, situated near Jallowkhana.
As soon as he moved towards his home after parking the car, the shootout started.
"In the wounded condition, Deepa ran towards his home calling for help and was followed by the attackers firing at him. His father Vijay Kumar Chopra (58) came out after listening to the cries of his son. He could not bear the shock and succumbed on the spot due to cardiac arrest," Paramjeet added.
On the identification of Madan Chopra, who was also present outside his home at that time, the police had booked case against 11 persons, including two unidentified, under section 302 (murder), 148 and 149 (both pertaining to rioting used armed weapons) of Indian Penal Code and 25/54/59 of Arms Act of 1959.The accused were identified as Raj Kumar alias Raja, Poppy, Gurpreet Singh, Vicky, Pankaj Kumar, Jagga, Sunny, Sukha and Arju, while two persons have been noted as unidentified in the FIR registered by city police station, on Sunday.
Police was also depending upon the footage of the CCTV camera installed outside the Power-Health club outside which Deepa was shot dead.
SSP Kapurthala, Inderbir Singh said, "We have rounded up several persons since the incident for investigations. It would be immature to say anything on this but certainly, in a day or two, the culprits would be behind the bar."
