9 months after love marriage, 24-years-old lecturer 'murdered for dowry'

A 24-year-old college lecturer was found dead at her Prem Nagar residence here on Friday following which the police booked her husband and in-laws for dowry death.

The police said the deceased, Bhavneet Kaur, had a love marriage with Balpreet Singh eight months ago. "But, as per the complainant's father, Balpreet Singh, his mother Manjit Kaur, father Manjit Singh and sister would harass her for not fulfilling their demands," sub-inspector Pawan Kumar said. The police have arrested Balpreet, his mother and father.

An MBA graduate, Bhavneet Kaur was a lecturer of management at Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women here. In his complaint to the police, victim's father, Davinder Singh, has alleged that few months after the marriage, the accused started harassing Bhavneet for dowry and would even thrash her at times.

Davinder Singh also alleged that Honey had informed them about his daughter's ill health on Friday morning. "But, by the time he reached their house, Bhavneet was dead. He has alleged that the accused had strangulated Bhavneet, though they told him she was ill," Pawan Kumar said.

Balpreet Singh has told the police that he and his wife used to live in the first floor of the house they shared with his parents. "He has claimed that he had stepped out from home for some work and on returning found the door to his and his wife's room locked. On breaking open the door, Balpreet who is city-based trader claimed, that he found his wife hanging from the ceiling of the fan," Kumar added.

SI Pawan Kumar said the police had arrested three Balpreet and his father and mother in connection with the case, while the rest are absconding.
