Tall claims by the city police of trying to curb crime in the city seem to be falling flat with broad daylight crimes being reported every other day.
Two motorcycle-borne miscreants on Friday allegedly robbed the manager of Shingar Cinema of Rs. 3.70 lakh after opening fire at him on the
Shingar Cinema road near Kashmir Nagar Puli.
However, in the melee the bullet hit the manager's left leg. He was rushed to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), where his condition was stated to be out of danger.
The victim, Gurdas Singh (50), also looks after the accounts of filling station of owner of Shingar Cinema, Gurcharan Singh.
According to police and eyewitnesses, around 12:45 pm on Friday, Gurdas was on his way on his motorcycle to Orient Bank of Commerce near Baba Than Singh Chowk to deposit Rs. 3.70 lakh in the filling station's account. As he reached near Kashmir Nagar Puli, two motorcycle-borne miscreants came from the wrong side and intercepted him, before trying to snatch his bag containing the cash.
When Gurdas resisted, the miscreants opened fire at him. As the bullet hit the victim's leg, he fell down, following which the accused snatched his bag and fled the scene. Some passers-by attempted to catch the accused by chasing them, but they managed to escape amid heavy traffic, while flashing the gun in the air.
The eyewitnesses said the black motorcycle's rider was wearing a helmet, adding that the accused fled towards Samrala Chowk.
The police were sounded, and Gurdas were rushed to CMCH.
The police said they were suspecting more than two persons to be behind the crime. They said the accused confronted Gurdas from the front, which meant that aides of the accused were monitoring his movement.
The police also suspect some acquaintance behind the crime, as the accused were known to the routine and route of the victim.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) (central) Ramneesh Choudhari said a case had been registered at the Division Number 6 police station, and investigation had been initiated to arrest the accused.
