Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) secretary Almuddin Saifi has landed in soup as the Basti Jodhewal police have booked him for extortion and abetment to suicide.
Saifi and his two accomplices, Naseem Sirfata and Ahsan, were booked after a labourer died due to heart failure, following the alleged threats and demand of extortion money by the accused.
The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Khurshid (45) of Maya Puri area. The case has been registered following the statement of Anees Ahmad, nephew of the deceased.
In his complaint, Ahmad said around 9:30 am on Monday, Saifi, along with his accomplices, Naseem Sirfata and Ahsan, assaulted Khurshid's sons, Basim and Nafees Naeem, and abducted them with the intention of implicating them in a false case.
The accused then handed them over to the CIA staff police claiming that Basim and Nafees Naeem were wanted by the Jamalpur police in a burglary case. Later, the accused demanded Rs. 30,000 from Khurshid to get his sons released from police custody.
Ahmad alleged that his uncle went to arrange money by mortgaging his house on late Monday night. Meanwhile, harassed and tensed over the incident, his uncle suffered a cardiac arrest. He was rushed to civil hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead. Following his demise, his kin held a protest outside the civil hospital on late Monday night.
Irked over the incident kin of deceased, led by Bablu Kureshi, member, Minority Council of Punjab, went on hunger strike outside the Basti Jodhewal police station on Tuesday.
Kureshi said they would end the hunger strike only after arrest of the accused. Police force was deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident.
Inspector Balwinder Singh, station house officer, Basti Jodhewal police station, said the police would take appropriate action after investigation.
Meanwhile, Almuddin Saifi claimed he had nothing to do with the matter. He said as he had been helping underprivileged people, some other party leaders were trying to trap him in a fake case owing political rivalry.
He said the family of the two boys rounded up by the police had approached him. Therafter he had approached the police about the matter. The police immediately released one of the men, while retained one for questioning. He never contacted the family after it.
