A doctor from Samana in Patiala district has been arrested for allegedly raping his fiancée and later refusing to marry her.
On the complaint of the 22-year-old woman, the Sadar police registered a case and on Saturday arrested 26-year-old accused Dr Kanwar Samrat. The police
produced him before the duty magistrate on Sunday, who sent him to two-day police remand.

The complainant, who belongs to Buddha Singh Wala village of Baghapurana in Moga district, claimed that she was engaged to the accused on May 22. She passed her B Sc this year and her fiancé encouraged her to go in for higher studies. He allegedly called her to Ludhiana to fill application forms for her admission to M Sc course on October 10 and took her to a hotel near Daad village. The accused allegedly developed physical relations with her forcibly, saying soon they would be married.

Later, he allegedly raped her repeatedly before refusing to marry her and threatening her against reporting the matter to anyone. Sub-inspector Harinder Singh said the police had registered a case under sections 376 (rape), 420 (cheating) and 506 (threatening) of the IPC.
