The state transport department has directed owners of vehicles bearing registration numbers between 0001 and 500 to get high security number plates by January 31.
The department has also directed the district transport officer and traffic wing of the Ludhiana police to challan violators
after the deadline.
However, vehicle owners holding receipt of having applied for the number plates would not be penalised.
For the convenience of residents and to speed up the task, the district transport department has installed machines producing high security number plates at seven major auto dealers in the city.
According to district transport officer Manpreet Singh Chhatwal, the department would initiate action against vehicles bearing number from 0500 to 1000 from March 1.
The initial stage of the drive against violators could be an ordeal for the police and transport authorities a majority of registration numbers between 0500 and 1000 are used by politicians and bureaucrats. However, Chhatwal said the department would take action against violators without any bias.
