The police have arrested Vishal Kumar, the son of head constable Vijay Kumar, in a hit and run case.

The head constable, along with his driver Jagdish Pal, has been absconding.

The police produced Vishal in the court on Sunday. The court has sent him to the Ludhiana Central Jail on judicial remand.

Vishal's car had hit a motorcycle on October 2 in which two youth, Lekh Raj and Ajay Kumar, were injured. Vishal had fled from the scene leaving his car behind.

Lekh Raj later succumbed to injuries on October 7 in the CMC hospital.

The police managed to locate the owner of the car through documents recovered from the vehicle. The car belonged to head constable Vijay Kumar.

But to save his son, the head constable told the police that his driver Jagdish Pal was driving the car when it hit the motorcycle. The PAU police had then booked Jagdish Pal in the case.

When Lekh Raj's family raised objections demanding an impartial inquiry in the matter, the higher police officials referred the case to the CID department

In its inquiry, the police have come to know that on the day of the accident, Vishal was driving the car, and his father had given a false statement to the police.

After the inquiry, the police have registered another FIR against Vijay Kumar, his son Vishal and aide Jagdish Lal.

Sub-inspector Gurvir Singh, SHO, police station PAU, said the police have been conducting raids to arrest the rest of the accused.

With only 17 out of nearly 2,400 unauthorised colonies in Ludhiana regularised for the past more than one year, the real estate sector in the city has taken a nosedive as the property prices in many parts of the city have come down heavily.
