Residents are up in arms against the daytime lifting of garbage in Ludhiana by the private companies due to the stink that the garbage raises and the traffic chaos that results when the contractor's big trucks enter the narrow lanes.
Ghumar Mandi is one of the areas where lifting
causes inconvenience not only to residents and shopkeepers, but also to vehicles that find it difficult to find space for driving or for parking, when the garbage collection truck is on the move.
The dump near Khalsa College for Women in Ghumar Mandi has become an example of the inconvenience faced by residents, during the day-time lifting of garbage. There is unbearable stench, which has made life miserable for area residents as well as the shopkeepers in the market.
Shalini Sharma, a resident of Ghumar Mandi, said that the truck's entry into the afternoon and picking up the garbage was a big nuisance as this led to problems for people around the areas.
"First of all, it causes a traffic jam as the truck is parked in the middle of the road.
Secondly, foul stench is produced during the day when the garbage is picked up," said Sharma.
Restaurant owners in the area have also been agitated as they said that the foul stench from the garbage was harming their business as picking of garbage forced their customers to flee. They say that the work should be done at night everyday so that no one suffers.
Jatinder Singh, another shopkeeper, seconded the restaurant owners' move.
The MC has given the contact of picking up the garbage in most of the areas to a private company, A2Z.
An MC official said that the daytime for picking up the garbage by private company was chosen as most of the garbage is thrown in dumps in morning and should be removed by afternoon before it starts emanating foul stench.
