Personal security has become a status symbol, so much so that people miss no opportunity to enjoy the same even if there is no apparent threat to their lives. Fifteen of total the 57 policemen attached with the MC's police wing are attached with different officials of the civic body, resulting in crunch of policemen for their primary duties.

Among the officials who are enjoying the services of cops also are additional commissioners. The arrangement is in violation of the norms as the officials have no permission to have cops as guards.

The policemen attached with the MC have the primary purpose of ensuring law-and-order during anti-encroachment and demolition drives when there is a threat of public outrage.

In response to an RTI plea filed by Kuldeep Khaira, MC said that 15 of the 57 police officials are there on duty with the top officials of the MC. As per the reply of police wing of MC, five police officials are attached with the mayor, Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria.

Interestingly three police officials have been attached with former mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura, who, however, has been authorized by the office of director general of police for the same.

Two police officials have been attached with municipal commissioner Rahul Tewari, while one each with additional commissioners Sumeet Jarangal and Isha Kalia, Devinder Singh and Kamlesh Bansal. One policeman has also been attached with Joint commissioner PS Ghuman.

As per the RTI reply, none except Hakam Singh Giaspura has permission from authorities to have cops as guards.

Khaira who had filed the RTI said that top officials of the MC were 'misusing' the powers vested in them. "The RTI reply by MC itself claims that these officials are not eligible for security personnel. This has also caused scarcity of police personnel during anti-encroachment and demolition drives,"said Khaira.
