Police averted a suicide after they called a 62-year-old man to the division number 3 station here on Friday.
Gurbachan Singh, a resident of Textile Colony, Cheema Chowk, had issued a threat to the Municipal Corporation (MC) on February 18 to commit suicide in front of the MC office
on Friday if the officials failed to give him tax statement information (TS-1) certificate.

After an official - to whom he had submitted the letter - read the note on Friday, he alerted the higher authorities and police.

The police called upon Singh and the MC officials to resolve the matter.

Singh said the matter of his house was sub judice and he had been asking the MC officials to issue TS-1 certificate in his name since 1995, but the officials were reluctant. He said he had in 1995 got a case registered against one Ajit Singh and others who allegedly tried to take possession of his house by producing fake documents. He said a TS-1 certificate had already been issued in the name of Ajit Singh and others and had urged the officials to reissue it in his name.

“Frustrated with the lackadaisical attitude of the officials, I issued a suicide threat,” Singh said.

Meanwhile, MC officials said the matter was sub judice, so they could not issue the certificate in his name till the court issued order in this regard.

After receiving an assurance of not taking any extreme step from Singh, the police let him free.

Brij Mohan, station house officer (SHO) of the police station division number 3, said the matter had been resolved.
