Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal here on Thursday convened a meeting with Germany-based company Raeela for setting up a plant to produce fuel from farm waste (paddy and wheat straw). A committee was constituted under the secretary, agriculture, KS Pannu.

The meeting, organised at the circuit house here, was also attended by Raeela officials, including Prof Carl Hans, besides Batala MLA Ashwani Sekhri and officials of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB).

The CM said this project would give a boost to the income of farmers in the state, adding that, "the company will buy farm waste from farmers. It would be processed to produce fuel, a substitute for coal. This fuel will also be used in thermal plants, cement factories and brick kilns and would be cheaper that coal."

Prof Hans also gave a PowerPoint presentation to the CM on the project, which is running successfully in various countries across the world.
