Atwal stated this while addressing the gathering at SCD Government College for Boys on the occasion of 64th Republic Day on Saturday after hoisting the national flag.
The speaker said Punjabis had played an important role in the freedom struggle and if we were enjoying freedom it was all because of freedom fighters and martyrs who had sacrificed everything for the country. Martyrs such as Master Tara Singh, Baba Khadak Singh, Lala Lajpat Rai, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Shaheed Udham Singh, Shaheed Madan Lal Dhingra and others sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country. He also paid tributes to the martyrs.
Speaker Atwal said under the rein of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal the state had bagged achievements. The SAD-BJP alliance had introduced right to service in the state. Many projects were also introduced for the development of industry and agriculture. Multi-specialty hospitals were established to provide quality health services to the people. The alliance had developed better road infrastructure and also established new schools, research centres and universities.
Earlier, the speaker took salute from the march past held by police personnel, which was led by ACP Ramneesh Chaudhary.
Atwal honoured freedom fighters and distributed eight sewing machines to widows and tricycles to handicapped people.
Students of various schools exhibited cultural programme on the occasion. Personnel of 16 departments also exhibited tableaux.
Atwal also distributed cash prize and trophies among the winners of essay writing competition on "national integrity and communal harmony".
Harpreet Kaur of Dasmesh Senior Secondary School, Dasmesh Nagar, bagged the first prize in the competition. Saloni of Government Senior Secondary School (girls), Jawahar Nagar, and Archit Chaddha of Spring Dale Senior Secondary School bagged second and third place, respectively.
Deputy commissioner Rahul Tewari, police commissioner Ishwar Singh, municipal corporation commissioner Rakesh Verma, mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwadiya, additional deputy commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta, ADC (development) Rishipal Singh, district BJP president Parveen Bansal, vice chairman of Punjab Vyopar Board Madan lal Bagga, chairman of Dalit Vikas Board Vijay Danav, chairman of Safai Karamchari Bhalayi Board Raj Kumar Atikaye were also present at the occasion.
