With the post of secretary of municipal corporation now vacant, competition has sprung up among superintendents of the four zones of the MC.
Meanwhile, Hartej Singh, who is the superintendent of Zone D, appears to be the front runner in the race.
It has been learnt that MC commissioner RK Verma has assured Hartej that he would be made the secretary within a short duration of time.
Interestingly, Hartej has been able to raise the collection of house tax from Rs. 26 crore in 2011-12 to nearly Rs. 27 crore this year, with one month remaining for the financial year to end.
This performance is one of the factors, which has enabled him to be the blue-eyed boy in the civic body.
The post of secretary is considered coveted in the MC, as the secretary is responsible for preparing the agenda of the House meeting and also arranging it.
Timely appointment of the new secretary is crucial as mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria has said that the House meeting would be held on March 7 or 8.
The previous secretary, Manjit Singh, who was appointed nearly three months ago, retired on February 28.
Besides Hartej, there are four more house tax superintendents, who are vying for secretary's post. These include, Tejinder Pal Singh from Zone D, Jasdev Singh Shekon from Zone A, Neeraj Jain from Zone B and Surinder Pal Singh from Zone C.
Hartej is not only the senior-most superintendent in the Ludhiana MC, but is also the fourth senior among the 38 superintendents in all municipalities of the state.
Sources said in a meeting on Friday, the MC commissioner had told Hartej that he would be made officiating secretary for the time being, till official orders were received from the department of local bodies.
Hartej joined MC in 1978, and since then has served on various posts, including as personal assistant to former Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) mayor Apinder Singh Grewal.
