Union information and broadcasting minister and local MP Manish Tewari on Wednesday asked the SAD-BJP government to introspect as to why investors were apprehensive of coming to Punjab and why were local industrialists running away from here.

Addressing a press conference here, Tewari said Capt Amarinder Singh is the strength of the Congress in the state and a united Congress in Punjab stood a good chance of improving its tally in the parliamentary elections as the public was disillusioned with the "anti-people" policies of the SAD-BJP government.

Taking a dig at the "shopping spree" of the Punjab government to Mumbai inviting companies to invest in Punjab, he said many industrialists had told him that they were apprehensive of investing in Punjab as instead of getting incentives and encouragement that they got in other states, here they were asked as to what "share" they could give to the powers that be.

Asked to comment on the SAD allegations that the UPA government was biased to Punjab, the minister said that during the last nine years of the UPA rule, Punjab had got 234% more grants than it had received during the NDA rule between 1998 and 2004. "They can't pass their failures on to the Centre," he said.

He said the state government was now trying to levy various taxes, like property tax, on people and no section of society, whether it was farmers, traders or industrialists, was happy.

About his performance as an MP, Tewari said it was up to the people to judge it.
