Wall collapse: contractor arrested, councillor at large

Taking swift action in the case where three labourers were killed in a wall collapse on Bahadurke road, the police arrested the contractor, Nirmal Singh, on Saturday.

However, owner of the property where the labourers were working, independent councillor Randhir Singh Sibia is at
large.

Meanwhile, a large number of labourers gathered near the New Vegetable Market and held a protest to demand compensation for the families of the victims. They also demanded the arrest of the accused.

The victims, Jagdish Yadav alias Ram Yadav (35) of Nepal, Manohar Lal (38) of Haripur Khalsa of Phillaur and Ram Lal (45) of Bhora were cremated on Saturday.

Ram Lal's wife and daughters were inconsolable. His 20-year-old daughter, Pooja, said her father was the breadwinner of their family of six. She said with her father's demise, they had no option but to return to their native village in Uttar Pradesh or start working.

Inspector Dharampal, SHO, Salem Tabri police station, said the contractor, Nirmal Singh, was arrested from Bharti Colony, adding that efforts were on to arrest the councillor.
