The Bahujan Sangharsh Party (Kanshi Ram) has opposed the move to open a "temple" in the memory of Kanshi Ram in Bunga Sahib village of Rupnagar district, saying the BSP founder was never in favour of it.

National SC/ST Commission chairman RL Punia, who is also a Congress MP, will inaugurate the "temple" built in Kanshi Ram's maternal village on Friday.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Bahujan Sangharsh Party president and Kanshi Ram's brother Dalbara Singh said the only memorial Kanshi Ram got constructed for himself was a house at his birthplace in Bunga Sahib, which was inaugurated by BSP president Mayawati in 1998.

Dalbara alleged that the Congress was trying to further its interests by using Kanshi Ram's name. He claimed that crores of rupees were being collected in his brother's name at Punia's behest.

Urging the government not to allow the inauguration of the "temple", Dalbara said, "We won't allow anyone to misuse Kanshi Ram's name and install his idol in any so-called temple."
