A woman on Monday accused the personal assistant of Punjab forest minister Surjit Kumar Jayani of bigamy.

Sarabjit Kaur, a resident of Rajpura colony, along with her relatives, staged a protest in front of the office of the senior superintendent of police.

The agitators were protesting against police reticence in slapping a case under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC against the accused, identified as Sawarn Singh.

The police had registered a case under Section 420 of the IPC against Sawarn and had sent him to jail.

Sarabjit claimed that she had got married to Sawarn three years ago with the mutual consent of both the families.

She further alleged that few months ago she had come to know about the previous marriage of her husband from which he also had a 22-year-old son, who lives in Chandigarh.

The agitators threatened to intensify their protest if the police failed to register a rape case against Sawarn.
