In a strongly worded communication to Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, former deputy speaker of Punjab assembly, Bir Devinder Singh, asked the CM to immediately pay attention to the century old building of Nawab Sher Mohamad Khan Institute of Advance Studies, Malerkotla, being run by
the Punjabi University, Patiala, for almost a quarter of a century.

The institute is celebrating its silver jubilee in 2013, but, Devinder Singh pointed out, the institute did not have a building of its own; the institute has been running from a rented accommodation.

The Institute was set up in September 1988 by the Punjabi University, Patiala, having accepted the popular demand of the Muslim population of the erstwhile state of Malerkotla for paying adequate attention to the development of Urdu, Persian and Arabic.

The old building is utterly dilapidated and a mishap could happen anytime.
