The elderly from the region need not worry any more as a health-care-cum-old-age home is coming up at Rongla village, 10 km from here.

The first-of-its-kind centre has been set up with financial help from the Japan embassy  -and RITES India Limited, a government organisation working in the construction sector.

The centre is the brainchild of Help Age India, an NGO, which has played an important role in managing funds and other formalities. Bhavneshwar Sharma, north India, regional head of Help Age India, said the first phase of the centre is to provide medical facilities to the elders. However, the centre will also act as an old-age home.

Social worker Paramjit Kaur, who donated the land for the centre, said that these days children didn't have time for their parents. The ones with enough money were able to sustain themselves, however, the ones who were financially dependent on their children had to go knocking from door to door for shelter and survival.

After starting mobile health check-up vans in Amritsar and Chandigarh, Help Age India has also started a mobile van facility in Patiala. The van is equipped to provide medical check-up facilities for the elderly. The van moves from door to door in villages and provides medical aid. It has an MBBS doctor, a pharmacist, and a project officer who ensures proper treatment takes place.
