A man was shot dead after a clash broke out between two groups during a meeting of district arrtiya (commission agent) association at Dirba here on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as 32-year-old Harpal Singh Chattha, the husband Dirba muncipal council president Parminder Kaur.
Senior superintendent of police, Harcharan Singh Bhullar rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. The SSP said the meeting had been called at the grain market to remove president Sanjeev Bansal.

The victim wanted Bansal to remain president and entered into an altercation with the opposite group. The main accused Teja Singh wanted to become the president himself.

Both the groups belonged to the Shirimoni Akali Dal. Police said Teja had opened fire at Harpal with his licenced weapon. The police registered a case under Section 302 and 307 of the IPC against nine people including Teja Singh.
