The contract workers' union of Pepsu Road Transport Corporation, Azad, here on Tuesday blocked the entrance to the city bus stand for an hour to protest against what the union described as violation of labour laws by the state government.
The mid-day blockade disrupted the movement of
buses and inconvenienced the public. During the protest, union president Jasmer Singh claimed the government was making unjustified deductions in their salaries and workers were being made to work for 16 hours in a day. "Such things are in gross violation of labour laws," Jasmer Singh said.

Union general secretary Rupinder Singh, meanwhile, said they had also been demanding the abolition of contract system. "Though the state government has assured us of looking into our demands, no concrete steps have been taken," he said.
