As the logjam between students and varsity administration continues over the issue of manhandling of a research scholar at the hands of a teacher, the five-member factfinding committee, comprising senior varsity officials, would submit its report to the vice chancellor (V-C) on
The five-member enquiry committee, constituted by V-C Jaspal Singh in the wake of huge protestations from the Punjabi University Research Scholar Association (PURSA), is led by dean academics SS Khaira, with four others on board -- dean research, HS Pannu; Dr Paramjeet Singh from sports science; Prof Sarbjinder Singh from religion studies; and dean colleges, Jamshid Ali Khan.
On the evening of February 28, Gurjant Singh, a teacher at the Punjabi department, allegedly slapped and abused research scholar Harpreet Singh when the latter got late in ushering the professor's wife to a dinner organised by the varsity.
Last week, a protest call was given by PURSA to demand for strict action against Gurjant, which received quite a good response from students.
Since this is the third instance in which the professor has landed himself in the dock for misbehaving with students in the last three years, PURSA had sat on an indefinite dharna in front of the varsity library, demanding his termination from the university, since Friday last.
"I don't know why the administration is bent upon saving the skin of the errant teacher. Most of the university teachers want him suspended too; his behaviour has always been controversial," said PURSA president Inderjeet Singh.
The controversial teacher had also contested for the post of executive member of Punjabi University Teacher Association (PUTA) on behalf of the Punjabi University teacher's welfare group; the results of the polls had been withheld due to a court case.
