The exit of Pawan Kumar Bansal from the railway ministry might derail the projects he announced for Punjab, especially this district, in his last budget in February.
Bansal resigned after the central bureau of investigation (CBI) caught his nephew, Vijay Singla, in the cash-for-promotion scandal. The Congress parliamentarian from Chandigarh, who has roots in Tappa town of Barnala district, was born in Sunam, his maternal place in Sangrur district.
Local MP Vijayinder Singla, who in December last year invited Bansal to lay the foundation stone of the over bridge on the Sangrur-Barnala railway crossing, had pinned hopes on him to get the money to have it ready before the coming Lok Sabha elections.
In the budget, the small railway station of Sunam had received Rs. 7.34 crore for upgrade to a model halt, besides an iron footbridge over its railway crossing. Bansal had announced model railway stations at Sunam, Lehragaga, Malerkotla and Dhuri as well, though the money for the works was yet to be released.
Bansal's quitting the post has meant that the better-facility hope of local commuters was short-lived. He had set aside Rs. 5 crore for the construction of a railway under bridge at Lehragaga crossing, and another Rs. 3 crore for the laying of an iron footbridge over the line in Dhuri.
The electrification of the Jakhal-Hisar; Jakhal-Dhuri-Ludhiana, and Rajpura-Dhuri-Lehra Mohabhat lines was also mentioned in the budget, besides the plan to run a new train from Dhuri to Bathinda by extending the route of Hisar-Dhuri passenger train to Sirsa in Haryana.
