Senior officials of the district administration on Saturday chose not to attend the cremation ceremony of Manpreet Singh Ghuman, 27, who was murdered in the US on August 6.

The ceremony, held at Majri Kishnewally village in the Amloh sub-division, was attended by people from various villages. However, the authorities and senior politicians from most parties were conspicuous in their absence.

Pleading anonymity, a villager said that Manpreet's murder had shocked Punjabis in India and those living abroad, but no senior official or politician had tried to console the family.

"Our politicians are so busy fighting among themselves for power and carrying out personal vendetta that they have no time to spare for the common man," he alleged.

Son of farmer Surinder Singh, Manpreet had migrated to the US two years ago and was working as a clerk at a petrol pump in South Lake Tahoe in California, where he was shot dead on August 6.

The Lake Tahoe Secret Witness Programme had offered a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect, and an anonymous donor also contributed an additional $2,500 to the reward, but the case remains unsolved.
