Negligence on the part of the local police came to the fore after an undertrial fled from custody here on Saturday.
Constables Meharban Singh and Harbans Singh have been suspended and booked on charges of dereliction of duty. Undertrial Gurnam Singh was lodged at the Sangrur
jail under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for the past three months.

According to information, the doctor in the jail had referred Gurnam to the dental college at Patiala after he complained of acute pain in his jaws on Saturday.
Investigation officer Karminder Singh said the accused constables instead of taking him to Patiala took him to Dhuri, from where he escaped.

"We have started investigations into the case and raids have been conducted to nab the culprit," he said.

Gurnam was accused of smuggling 1.5 quintals of poppy husk. The police had also recovered Rs. 2 lakh in cash from him at the time of his arrest at Dhuri. This is the second such incident in the past three weeks. On November 19, murder accused Gulzar Singh lodged in the Sangrur jail had escaped; though the Mansa police nabbed him later.
