Guru Ravidas memorial to come up in Khuralgarh

The government is working overtime to finalise the project of Minar-e- Begampura, a memorial to preserve the legacy of guru Ravidas, cultural affairs minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur said on Sunday.

He was taking part in a state-level function being organised to celebrate the the 636th birth anniversary of the saint at Khuralgarh village. He said the 11-member concept committee constituted by the chief minister was preparing a blue-print of the building. It would be a historic monument that would preserve the legacy of guru Ravidas for posterity, he added.

He added that the proceedings to acquire 14.4 acre of land for the project had started. "It would be a tribute of the Punjab government to the great saint who spearheaded the fight against social discrimination and spread the message of equality and brotherhood," he added.

Chief parliamentary secretary Sohan Singh Thandal, who is a member of the site selection committee, announced that the village would also be developed as an education hub.

Garhshankar MLA Surinder Singh Bhulewal Rathan and chairman of Guru Ravidas Itihasic Asthan Khuralgarh, Shingara Ram Sahungra were among those who paid homage to the guru.
