If you want your money to be safe, ensure that you don't have company in the automated teller machine (ATM) kiosk.
The district police claim to have arrested a hacker who robbed people who were casual about password security. Hacker Jasvir Singh would capture their passwords as they
did transactions at the ATM and then swipe cloned cards to steal the money from their accounts, the police have said.
During the arrest here on Monday, not only did Jasvir's fake bank account came to light but also the police recovered cloned debit cards he had swiped to do shopping with stolen money. The police also recovered Rs. 30, 000 he had stolen by trick and a subscriber's identity module (SIM) card claimed on a fake identity. "Jasvir used it to purchase items from online stores by drawing money from the hacked accounts," said a police spokesman.
Jasvir Singh and co-suspect Gursewak Singh are charged under Section 420 (cheating), 380 (theft in a house), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 467 (forgery), 468, and 471 of Indian Penal Code and section 66 of Information Technology Act.
As per plan the accuse use to enter in the ATM counter along with some other customer and then note down quickly their password or the sixteen-digit number printed on ATM card. Following this, the accused then used to make fake ATM card of original customer and then make their fake Identification Cards. Later the online shopping was done with the help of these fake ATMs and Identifications. The accused were also having a phone number issued on fake ID and the mobile number proved them helpful when the courier had to be come on door.
Speaking to HT Senior Superintendent of Police mansa Narinder Bhargav said, "We were getting complaints from some customers about the theft being done through Internet. A complainant Bikker Singh of village Karamgarh Attanwali filed a complaint with police on December 17 last year following which many facts came out about the modus operandi of the accused. Later in investigation we found the astonishing facts of accused having number of fake ID cards and ATM cards. The accused then do online shopping but use to give half address that confuses the couriermen who then call on the mobile number given by the accused. This mobile number was too issued on fake ID. We had arrested one accused and are on hunt for other."
