A farmer (60) of Bhagta in Bathinda district has been found murdered on the village cremation ground, which his body naked and face burnt.
Near the body of Baljit Singh at the cremation ground gate, the police found an earthen pot and some other items of exorcism and witchcraft. The
police rounded up few exorcists for interrogation. The autopsy report is not out yet.
The police say the farmer was murdered on Tuesday night probably and his body found on Wednesday morning. They have registered a case on the complaint of Baljit's brother, Surjit Singh (55), and son, Manpreet Singh (25).
"Around 7pm on Tuesday, Baljit Singh, a habitual drinker, had bought liquor from a shop inside the village. The cremation ground is on way to his house," said Gurdeep Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Bhagta. Baljit's wife died many years ago, and a few years ago, one of his son committed suicide.
The conditions in which the body lay pointed to murder. The victim's shirt was found near it, half arm detached. The rest of the clothes were found a little further away. Baljit's face was burnt and his eyes had swollen. The voodoo material found near the body led to the exorcist theory.
The police registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
