Five foreign nationals, pursuing higher education at Panjab University and a private college, were arrested for allegedly knocking down two cops of the Chandigarh Police here on Sunday.
The accused have been identified as Vangyal, Jigmewangchuk, Kezong, Jonyang and Ugyen, all residents of Bhutan and Tibet. They are putting up in Sector 15.
Jigmewangchuk and Kezong are engineering students of Chitkara University, while the other accused are pursuing graduation in the stream of arts from the University School of Open Learning (USOL), Panjab University.
According to SHO of the Sector-11 police station Gurmukh Singh, constables Sandeep and Sanjay of Cheetah squad were deployed at Sector 14/15 dividing road. The accused came there in a car bearing registration number CH-03F-8701 and were in inebriated condition. They were stopped by the cops for routine verification, but they allegedly fled after passing obscene remarks. The cops chased the accused on their duty motorcycle. Scared of being caught, the accused hit the motorcycle of the cops and fled the spot.
The injured cops informed the police control room (PCR) and asked for a back up. A police party traced the accused in the residential area of Sector 15-D and on seeing the police accused tried to escape on foot, but were apprehended. The medial examination confirmed that the accused had consumed liquor.
Sandeep and Sanjay were taken to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital for treatment.
A case of rioting, voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from duty and assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty under sections 147, 149, 332 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered in Sector-11 police station.
The accused were produced in the court and sent to judicial custody.
