The state vigilance and anti-corruption bureau on Saturday arrested an assistant sub-inspector posted at Nabha Kotwali police station while accepting bribe of Rs. 10,000 to settle a property fraud case.
ASI Balwinder Singh was nabbed by the vigilance team headed by inspector Satinder Kumar
from a private hotel at Nabha on the complaint of one Angrez Singh.
As per the vigilance bureau, Angrez Singh had complained that the ASI who was investigating officer in a fraud case registered against him and his wife, took his wife to police station on January 15 illegally and locked her up for two days.
To settle the fraud case, the ASI allegedly demanded Rs. 25,000 from the complainant and freed his wife on January 17 after he was paid the first installment of Rs. 15,000. The complainant promised to pay the remaining amount later.
On Saturday, the vigilance bureau laid a trap after the complainant asked the ASI to come to a city hotel to get Rs. 10,000. The ASI reached the hotel room, where a team of the bureau nabbed him.
On January 14, a case under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the complainant and his wife in connection with a property fraud.
"The ASI was demanding money to take the name of Anrez Singh's wife out of the case. In order to pressurise the accused in the case, the ASI took his wife in illegal custody and started demanding money to settle the case," said inspector Satish Kumar.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the ASI.
