Students and staff of Desh Bhagat University, Mandi Gobindgarh, on Tuesday organised an anti-drug rally, which was led by legendary marathon runner Fauja Singh (102), who is a world record holder in his age bracket and also referred to as 'Turbaned Tornado'.
The rally, which was
attended by a large number of students and staff members of the varsity, was flagged off by the veteran runner. The rally started from the university and after covering a distance of about 3 kms, it culminated in the nearby Amloh town.

The participants were carrying placards and raising slogans, highlighting the ill-effects of smoking, drinking and drug abuse. The people of the area gave a rousing welcome to the rallyists.

The university vice-chancellor Dr SS Chahal said such activities were need of the hour to keep the youth away from drugs.

Fauja Singh said that the social evil needed to be eradicated to make this world a better place to live in. "My beard and my turban has given me a distinct identity in the world," he said. He urged the youth to get themselves engaged in sports and contribute in antion-building.
