Nooran sisters leave Patiala spellbound

Nooran sisters, a rising name in the field of Sufi style of singing, left Patiala residents spell bound with their performance on the occasion of the 72nd birthday of late ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh.


Harpal Tiwana Center of Performing Arts (HTCPA) had oragnised the event to celebrate late Jagjit Singh's birthday; Jagjit was the founder trustee of HTCPA.

Nooran sisters -- Jyoti and Sultana, shot to fame after their stint with MTV-Coke Studios and the Sufi song 'Alaah hoo'.

The sisters opened the evening with the rendition of 'Allah Hoo' and belted out popular Sufi songs, including 'Dama Dum Mast Qalandar', 'Jugni' and many others. They also sang Jagjit Singh's Punjabi songs, including 'Long Da Lashkara' and 'Mitti Da Bawa'.

The duo belongs to the Sham Chaurasi Gharana of classical music and had trained with Gulshan Meer, their father and the inheritor of the tradition. They are the great granddaughters of Bibi Nooran, the classical Sufi and folk singer of yore.

The programme started with a one-minute silence in the memory of the late maestro. Clipping showing different phases of Jagjit's life were also exhibited.

Patiala deputy commissioner GK Singh was the chief guest on the occasion.
