The rampant absenteeism among health officials again came to fore on Thursday when many doctors were found absent or reaching late for duty, during a surprise check of Vigilance Bureau at four government health centers in the district.

The incident has also proved the civil surgeon Dr Usha Bansalw wrong, who had been claiming that she had ensured presence of 100% staff at every health centre in the district.

One senior medical officer and eight doctors were found absent during the raids. The doctors were posted in remote stations such as Dudhan Sadha, Shutrana, Kauli and Bhadson blocks, where there were few private medical experts.

"We have finalized the report of surpise check and it would be submitted to the DGP-cum-chief director vigilance Suresh Kumar for further action. It was really surprising that not most of the doctors were either absent or came late to hospital and that too when their colleagues informed them about the surpise check," said Pritam Singh, SSP, vigilance bureau.

He said that at Dudhan Sadha, the senior medical officer and five other doctors were absent. While at Kauli, irregularities had been detected in the medicine stocks.

"We have been getting inputs since long that most of the doctors posted in remote areas don't attend their offices regularly. So, we conducted the surprise checks to ascertain the facts," he said.

Meanwhile, civil surgeon Dr Usha Bansal said that she was aware of the surprise checks but not aware of how much doctors were late or absent. "Even I used to conduct raids and had issued warnings to some doctors for being late or absent. Now, we will initiate departmental action against those found absent during the VB raids," she said, adding that she would conduct surpise checks in the remote areas to ensure presence of 100% doctors.
