Five Democratic lawmakers in the US house have introduced a Congressional resolution on Baisakhi, commemorating the creation of the Khalsa, a fellowship of devout Sikhs, by the tenth Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh, in 1699.

Sikh Coalition, a community organisation, said here on Saturday that the Georgia state senate also had introduced a resolution honouring Baisakhi, while the cities of Elk Grove, California, and Houston and San Antonio, Texas, had issued proclamations.

Wishing the Sikh American community a joyous Baisakhi, the Congressional resolution takes note of the Sikhs' "rich contributions to the social, cultural, and economic vibrancy of our great nation, as well as the US Armed Forces".

Introduced by John Garamendi, the Congressional resolution is co-sponsored by fellow Democrats Joseph Crowley, co-chair of the Congressional India Caucus; John Lewis, Jackie Speier and Raul Grijalva. "The Sikh community is an integral part of American society, and they are an integral part of my Northern California Congressional district in particular," said Garamendi in a statement. "I have worked with the community for decades on issues ranging from combating hate crimes to agriculture."

Thanking Garamendi for introducing the resolution, Simran Kaur, advocacy manager for Sikh Coalition, said, "It is a testament to the vibrancy of our pluralistic society that Americans from all backgrounds can celebrate Baisakhi."
