All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and Uttar Pradesh in-charge Digvijaya Singh is camping in Lucknow to oversee his party's poll management and the campaign for 2012 assembly elections. Singh talks to HT about the controversies his statements have generated and the Congress' poll prospects.

Your statements have often been controversial. Why?
Whatever I have said till now has been in accordance with the Congress' policies and its election manifesto and has ultimately proved correct.

Such as?
About involvement of the saffron brigade - the RSS members in terror activities. This was ultimately proved correct. I had also spoken about the RSS and the BJP's support to agitations led by Swami Ramdev and Anna Hazare. Both have come true.

Do your statements have the support of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi?
I have never been questioned on my statements.
 
Your statement on the Batla House encounter contradicts Union home minister PC Chidambaram's view.
This has been discussed many times. I don't want to comment on this further.

How do you see the scenario?
We are contesting to form the next government on our own.

What if the Congress fails to get majority?
We will sit in the opposition.

Will your party support the SP or the BSP if they fall short of majority?
This is a hypothetical question. But we cannot support the corrupt BSP.

The BJP has fielded Madhya Pradesh leader Uma Bharti. Will it have any impact?
The decision to field Uma Bharti from Charkhari reflects poorly on the party. It shows its lack of leadership in UP.

The UPA's announcement of quota for minorities has come just before the elections. Isn't it a poll gimmick?
The Congress had promised quota for Muslims in its election manifesto in 2009 Lok Sabha polls. It is not confined only to UP.
