EC issues notice to Gujarat minister for alleged election code violation

The Election Commission on Wednesday issued a show cause notice to Gujarat Agriculture minister Dilip Sanghani for alleged violation of the model code of conduct for elections, the first such action in the run up to the assembly polls.

The EC issued the notice to the minister for laying the foundation stone of a road project after the enforcement of the election code and directed him to reply to the notice by October 15, failing which it will take appropriate action.

The Agriculture minister is reported to have laid the foundation stone of a road project in Amreli municipality in Saurashtra region of Gujarat on October 4.

The Model Code of Conduct came into force on October 3 post the declaration of election schedules for the state.

The state goes to polls in two phases on December 13 and 17.
