Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi on Friday thanked the voters of Maninagar for electing him for the third consecutive time. "The people of Maninagar were never voting to elect an MLA from Maninagar. They knew they were voting to secure their future," Modi said addressing a
rally organised in his constituency following his victory with a margin of 86,373 votes, defeating Congress candidate Shweta Bhatt.

He also thanked his party workers for the win. "I want to congratulate the BJP party workers of Maninagar for their hard work to ensure the victory of the party. There was not a single complaint of indiscipline within the party and everyone worked for the victory of the party here," Modi said.

Modi highlighted the importance of good governance and development to solve the problems of Gujarat and emphasised how the people had given importance to "people-oriented" government and not an "election-oriented" one.

"There is inclusive development in Gujarat because the BJP government ran the state by taking people together," Modi said.

He added that his government would give impetus to cotton farmers as textile sector is the second highest employment generation sector after agriculture.

He said his government would not depend on the export policy of central government because it was inconsistent and would instead provide value addition of cotton crop through five F's - farm, fibre, fabric, fashion and foreign.

"The main emphasis in the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat will be the textile sector," Modi added, stating that his government always had an integrated approach to solving problems.

He highlighted how the Kankaria Carnival was marketed and today more than one crore visitors, including foreigners, are part of it.

Modi further said that he now had 12 years of experience as a chief minister and understood the wishes and aspirations of people and assured them that he would work to achieve it.

During his election campaign, Modi had once held a rally in Maninagar constituency.

When the student outdid the mentor

As results came in on Thursday, Keshubhai Patel’s home wore a deserted look. The assumption that the Patel satrap would restrict the BJP’s tally by damaging its prospects in Saurashtra proved wrong. The damage was limited to eight of 54 seats, Smruti Koppikar reports.
