Hindi films are known for their song-and-dance sequences. Here’s looking at some of the hit songs from 2012 and the composers behind them.
Score card: Pritam attends the success bash of Golmaal Returns.
Hit list: Barfi!’s music was not only fresh, but had many gems including the
hummable ‘Ala Barfi’ sung by Mohit Chauhan. The peppy song worked like magic. ‘Aashiyaan’ sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Nikhil Paul George was loved for its folk feel and superb violins.
‘Tumhi ho bandhu’ and ‘Daru desi’ from Cocktail were both hits overnight,
the former, sung by Neeraj Shridhar and Kavita Seth, went on to become a sort of an anthem for the youth. ‘Daaru desi’ was a fresh song with a good melody sung brilliantly by Benny Dayal and Shalmali Kholgade. Another feather in Pritam’s hat is the popular dance number ‘Tu mera hero’ from Desi Boyz that went on to become one of the biggest hits of the year. Mika’s vocals added an extra edge to it.
What’s next: Race 2, Dhoom:3, Phata Poster Nikla Hero, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Again, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Murder 3.
Hit list: He gave many hits in the soundtracks of Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, English Vinglish, Aiyyaa and Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, but it was Ishaqzaade that
surpassed them all. Shalmali Kholgade’s
rendition of ‘Pareshan’ turned it into an overnight sensation with its burst of energy. This romantic song had the right mix of grunge and melody.
What’s next: Bombay Velvet, Kai Po Che, Lootera, Ghanchakkar.
Hit list: Many songs of Rowdy Rathore became hits including Shreya Ghosal and Wajid’s ‘Dhadang dhadang’ and item song ‘Aa re pritam pyare’ sung by Mamta Sharma. But it was ‘Chinta ta ta chita chita’ that took the cake. Not only was the film a remake, but Sajid and Wajid recomposed the song from the southern film as well.
However, Mika Singh added the fun flavour to the Hindi version. Sajid-Wajid were guest composers for Ek Tha Tiger and delivered a super hit in ‘Mashallah’. Sung by Wajid and Shreya, this energetic song with a middle-eastern flavour has a stylish and sexy feel to it.
What’s next: Sher Khan, Chashme Buddoor, Ishkq in Paris.
Hit list: Youthful, hip and energetic, these words best describe the music of Student Of The Year. Nazia Hassan’s cult
number ‘Disco deewane’ was remixed to include the elements a hit song needs — a peppy tune, catchy lyrics, a foot-tapping beat combined with nostalgia. Benny Dayal and Sunidhi Chauhan’s rendition merged brilliantly with Nazia’s voice. The
ballad ‘Ishq wala love’ is an effortless melody sung by Neeti Mohan, Shekhar Ravjiani and Salim Merchant. ‘Vele’ is another song with zing and youthful beats. The dance number ‘Radha’ sung by Shreya Ghoshal, accompanied by Vishal and Shekhar, was another hit track from this album. The soundtrack has the right mix, be it Hinglish or Indian and hip-hop style.
What’s next: Chennai Express, Happy New Year.
Hit list: Back with a bang, Himesh worked his magic with Son Of Sardaar’s super hit song ‘Po po’. Sung by Vikas Bhalla, Aman Trikha and Himesh himself, this Punjabi song has many peppy elements including dhol beats, which make it catchy. Perhaps the repetitive ‘po po’ routine worked the most for this one. It was a super hit that helped the film as it was filmed on guest star Salman Khan along with most of the cast of the film.
Himesh seemed to be on a roll in 2012 and in Khiladi 786 he delivered many hit songs including ‘Balma’, which is supposed to be a tribute to RD Burman and the energetic ‘Lonely’ that also features Yo Yo Honey Singh.
What’s next: Shortcut Romeo, one song each in Naam Hai Boss and Special Chabbis; and A New Love Ishtory.
