In 2008, Barack Obama garnered close to 70 million votes, some 10 million more than John McCain, and picked up 365 electoral college votes compared to 173 for his Republican rival.
   
Below is a breakdown of that vote:
   
+ Overall participation: 63.6 percent
+ Number of voters: 131 million

+ Barack Obama: 69.3 million votes
+ John McCain: 59.6 million
   
+ States Obama won: California, North Carolina, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia (Washington), Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin.

This group includes 28 states out of 50, and the District of Columbia.
