It was a scene straight out of a Bollywood flick. A dashing hero, surrounded by his large gang, locked in a heated altercation with the authorities. The script was played out by Shah Rukh Khan at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday night after the Kolkata Knight Riders game.
The Bollywood icon was conspicuous by his absence during his team’s match against the Mumbai Indians, till he made a dramatic late entry as the stadium lights were being put off after the last game of the season at the Wankhede.
On a high after the win, the KKR co-owner decided to celebrate the victory and led a big group, including 20 to 25 children sporting KKR jerseys into the ground. When the Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) security officials tried to stop the children from entering the ground the actor flew into a rage. What followed was a heated exchange between SRK and his group and the local association officials. The children, meanwhile, continued playing catch with a tennis ball on one side of the field.
The actor was in no mood to listen and despite attempts by his friends, KKR officials and IPL CEO Sundar Raman to calm him down, the fight escalated. But it was when Khan adopted an aggressive posture against the security guards, that the MCA managing committee members Deepak Patil, Vinod Deshpande, Arvind Kadam and Shrikant Tigdi stepped in.
Khan was taken aside by his friends, but he returned soon to confront the MCA officials.
Not to be cowed down, the MCA officials made a few phone calls to their senior members and soon treasurer Ravi Savant made an entry. A melee ensued and there was pushing between the two groups when he used the f-word when Savant walked up to him.
Contrary to his claims at the press conference later in the day, Khan was there with a huge coterie and not alone. An animated SRK was clearly the aggressor.
Even the entry of MCA member and ACP Iqbal Shaikh did not calm the actor, who dared the senior police official to arrest him. The actor was hurling abuses in Hindi at the officials when he was finally taken away by his friends.
