Not many recall that I used to bowl leg-spin too. One of my "ardent admirers" Shane Warne may not like it but I used to pitch it alright. And on my day, I had all the drift, dip, spin and the bonus of bounce too. My love for leg-spin was not due to the art and science or the romance of ball leaving the hand, but as a kid I always wanted to be involved in the game. Perhaps, one of the reasons why I took to opening the batting was that I never wanted to wait for my turn.
Unfortunately, that is exactly what I've been doing since May 19 when KKR's campaign ended. I've watched two games on TV, both played in my hometown. My house must be about 10-12 km from the Kotla, which is not very far by Delhi standards, but I hated it when one of my friends proposed to watch the games at the stadium.
I watched both the games on TV without the usual doses of popcorn and lemonade. How my world had changed - from a fast-paced ride on an express train, where platforms went in a blur, I felt as if I was driving in the Walled City area were traffic never moved.
While the league meant travel-practice-game and then travel again, now it is gym-practice-home and then a bit of TV. I hate sitting out of action.
Along the way, I've seen some exciting batting by Hussey and Raina for CSK and merciless hitting by Dwayne Smith of the Mumbai Indians, and then some smart batting by Brad Hodge.
My friend and India team-mate Amit Mishra had a brilliant tournament. He bowled in some difficult phases of the game and came out on top on most occasions.
He may not agree but my tips on leg-spin bowling are helping him big time!!!
In the end, a team with perhaps the most unusual jersey colours also produced some eye-catching cricket, especially while bowling.
My heart sinks to note that the tournament is now going back to Kolkata - the home of my team. My team or I won't be there except some billboards with pictures of KKR players.
I doubt if they would have withstood the rain and wind that the city faces these days.
Big let down
The other day at a promotional event, Shah Rukh bhai said, 'This year, the final will be in Kolkata and all I'd like to say is 'agar hum ney Eden mein final nahi khela to kya khela'.
We're sorry Shah Rukh bhai, we won't be there in the final this year. I have all my sportsman spirit intact but this thought is a killer.
