With one of the players, Ajit Chandila, already in their net for spot-fixing for more than a month, the Delhi police brass debated almost everyday whether to wait for more players to come in the net or swoop down immediately. But commissioner Neeraj Kumar resisted the pressure and asked his officers to be patient. “That was the time when the Delhi police brass was under tremendous pressure due to rape of five year old girl in the East Delhi on April 15. All kinds of rumours were circulating about the continuance of Neeraj Kumar as the commissioner of police. In fact one of the officers involved in the investigation suggested to him during one of the review meetings of the case that they have a case even with one player and that was Ajit Chandila. But the commissioner asked them to carry on the investigation and unravel the complete nexus,” said a Delhi police officer on the condition of anonymity.
Ultimately, after the Wednesday’s match there was conversation between between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians- Ankeet Chavan of the Jaipur based team came in the net of the Delhi police sleuths and he was arrested along with his two teammates- S Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila and 11 bookies. Initial investigation suggests that Sreesanth was using a phone number registered in the name of bookie Jiju Janardhan alias Biju and thought he might get away by not using his own phone. Anything goes in this league “Claiming to be innocent, he put all the blame on Jiju who he said lured him to spot fixing. Jiju was a close friend of Sreesanth and he never spoke on phone much with the pace bowler,” said a source. According to investigators, so far only three players are in the net but when they will interrogate 11 bookies, they might cough up involvement of more players or bookies.
