Investigation into the spot-fixing scam has revealed that Amit Singh, a cricketer-turned-bookie, was not only instrumental in approaching and inducting players into spot-fixing but was also tasked to take ‘extra care’ of the requirements of Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan.

Singh, who was acting as a conduit between the players and two main bookies — Chandresh Patel and Manan – was getting instructions from Mumbai underworld people which now confirms that he had underworld connections.

“We have learnt that Chandila had purchased two jeans amounting to Rs. 2.5 lakh, an expensive wristwatch (Diesel brand) and other expensive items from different cities. And it was Singh who was accompanying Chandila during shopping and he was the one who had made all the payments for him. The payments were made in cash as well as with credit/debit cards,” said a senior investigating officer.

No recovery
On how they spent the money, the officer said, generally money was used to purchase things like “expensive attires and accessories, high-end mobile phones and other electronic gadgets besides visiting high-profile parties. Some of the gifts were purchased by the players to impress their female friends.”

Though the chance of recovery of money in cash is minimal, the officer said that they have seized several items which were purchased by the players. “The presence of bookies with players during shopping and CCTV footage is enough evidence for us.”

Police had also intercepted Chandila's telephonic conversation with his wife in which she was heard asking him about the source of money. Chandila had asked her to keep mum saying such things can not be discussed over phone.
