The Mumbai crime branch on Sunday claimed they have tapes of a phone conversation in which Gurunath Meiyappan was heard allegedly disclosing the line-up of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) before a match to Virendra Randhawa alias Vindoo.
Crime branch sources said the contentious conversation between the two took place about five-six hours before a T20 match.
Gurunath was allegedly heard talking about two CSK players who were expected to miss the match. The police have taken Gurunath’s voice samples and will match them with the voices on the tape.
Sources said CSK did not win that particular match, which was with a team known to be a lightweight in the franchise.
The crime branch in their remand application for Gurunath had mentioned that they wanted to take Gurunath’s voice sample to verify it with excerpts from telephonic conversation they have.
Sources said they have so far booked Gurunath for his involvement in betting and it is only after scientific corroboration that they will be able to confirm that he was involved in passing on information to outsiders as well.
According to sources, apart from Vindoo’s interrogation, it was his calls to Gurunath that helped police pinpoint his involvement in the case.
While the police had arrested Gurunath for betting, they had suspected that since Gurunath was privy to sensitive information about CSK, there was a possibility he might have shared it with others.
