Vindoo Dara Singh claimed to the police that he had gone to watch a T20 league match in Chennai on an invitation from Gurunath Meiyappan, principal and co-owner of the Chennai Super Kings, who is also the son-in-law of BCCI president N Srinivasan.
During that match last month, Vindoo was
seen seated next to the wife of CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sakshi. A senior crime branch officer however said they had no plans to question Sakshi.
Sources said that apart from the revelations made by Vindoo, his mobile phone recovered at the time of his arrest show frequent calls exchanged with Gurunath.
“We would like to know whether they were just friends or they were part of a betting racket or whether during the calls inside match information were passed on,” sources said.
As per Vindoo, his association with Gurunath dates back to almost 4-5 years after they met at a social gathering in Chennai. Delhi-based bookie, Anand Saxena had allegedly introduced him to Gurunath.
Sources said that it was evident from Vindoo’s phonebook that he knew a lot of people in Bollywood and he knew a lot of cricketers as well. But connecting them to the case was not correct at this stage, the source added.
When asked if any Bollywood personality connected to the Chennai Super Kings would be questioned by the crime branch, Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime) said: “It is too early to comment on the investigation strategy as the probe has just begun. The whole this is at a very sensitive juncture.”
