Vidya Balan is tired of answering questions about what she will wear to the Cannes red carpet. In fact, she is so tired that when she was asked at a recent event if she felt the pressure to look immaculate at the international film fest given the media attention on red carpet couture, she said, “If it was an Indian male actor on the Cannes jury, would he have been questioned about what he was going to wear and if he was stressed about it? Something to think about in these times of gender equality.”

The actor added that she would sport a sari at the May 15-26 event, where she is a jury member.

Many in the industry echo Balan’s views about why it is always the women who get asked about their red carpet wardrobe. Adman Prahlad Kakkar says, “The media is only interested in knowing what an actor is wearing, rather than the intellectual take-ability of a star being on an international film festival's jury. Even when Aishwarya was on the Cannes jury and mingling with the biggest names of world cinema, people were only interested in her clothes. As for guys, they are all seen wearing tuxedos and look the same.”

Film critic Anupama Chopra says, “Such questions are part of the machinery. I don't think it takes away anything. People don't really ask guys such questions as men don't have much choice. In tuxedos, they all look the same.

However, actor Kalki Koechlin says, “I think red carpet events are all about dressing up, so I don't have a problem when I am asked about what I am going to wear. For guys, a black suit is the only option whereas we have a lot more to choose from,” says actor Kalki Koechlin.
